Letter from Nathaniel Swasey, Bath, [Maine], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1843 April 6th
Description:
Nathaniel Swasey writes to William Lloyd Garrison "in connection with the County Anti Slavery Society which was held in this place the 2d March, and the baseness of D. Sewall, a clergyman of Topsham in the meeting" and in his later writings. Swasey describes how Sewall disrupted the meeting and worked to prevent women from speaking at the meeting, insisting "that a female was not a person". He speculates on the progress of the antislavery cause and asserts "of one thing I am certain that the clergy are against us." Swasey then discusses past meetings he has attended and their relation to local houses of worship. In the postscript, he asks Garrison to make the necessary grammar and punctuation corrections if decides to publish the letter.
