Description:
Samuel Joseph May writes to Robert Folger Wallcut asking for the Liberator to be sent to the Syracuse Franklin Institute and to himself. He also comments that "we are all stricken down and afflicted by the tidings of the heavy calamity that has fallen upon dear Garrison and his loving family."

Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper with the embossed letters "J G M" in the head- spine corner. Above the embossed letters, "To R.F. Wallcut" is written in a different shade of ink and a different handwriting, while the number "4" is written in pencil under the salutation. On verso, along the head edge, "Saml. J. May Syracuse N.Y. 8 Jany. 1864" is written in a different shade of black ink and a different handwriting.
