Samuel Wolcott writes to Amos A. Phelps regarding his regret that Phelps violated his confidence in relation to some statements made about Mr. Paxton. He writes, "For your own satisfaction, I stated in an inclosure, which I marked as 'private & confidential,' my impressions more fully. On the strength of this letter, you refer the public to me for information, even quoting half a sentence, & representing me as having stated broadly what I had stated with a qualification. Now, my dear brother, this reference to me was unauthorized & forbidden, & therefore improper."
