Letter from Lewis Tappan, New York, [New York], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1835 May 29th
Description:
Lewis Tappan writes to William Lloyd Garrison providing instructions for Garrison to repay Tappan and his brother, Arthur Tappan, for covering the cost of Nathaniel Paul's trip to England. Tappan then discusses news that Israel Lewis is "soliciting subscriptions" in Albany and tells Garrison he has "been told (how true or false I do not know) that he pays over to Wilberforce settlement little or nothing of his collections." He also comments on news "of the proceedings at Boston this week" saying, "How trying to be shunned by the wise and good, excluded from churches, & see the influential members of society stopping their ears & closing their eyes against the truth." He discusses his decision not to invite "Mr. Kirk" to deliver a speech, remarking that based on his earlier speeches "he would please our opponents by censuring us unreservedly."
