Letter from Mary Carpenter, Bristol, [England], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1873 Sept[ember]
Description:
In this poem sent to William Lloyd Garrison, Mary Carpenter says goodbye to Garrison as he leaves England. Carpenter writes, "Thou champion of the suffering and oppressed; Lonely thou standest on the crowded deck." She encourages Garrison to keep fighting to end slavery and tells him to "let your faith be as the mustard seed; Send deep your roots into the hearts of men."
Title devised by cataloger.
See MS A.1.2 v.37, p.83B for a letter from Mary Carpenter to William Lloyd Garrison stating that she will send him this poem.
After the end of the poem, a note indicates that this was "Copied for W.L. Garrison by Rosanna Powell, MC' adopted daughter [illegible] Bristol Sept. 1873."
