Letter from Francis George Shaw, New York, [New York], to William Lloyd Garrison, 1863 Nov[ember] 4
Description:
Francis George Shaw writes to William Lloyd Garrison thanking him for his letter, commenting that "if any parents could be reconciled to the early death of an only son [Robert Gould Shaw], we ought to be." Shaw says he and his wife are thankful that their son "was chosen, among so many equals, to be the martyred hero of the downtrodden of our land - but the heart does not reason ..." He also thanks Garrison for the photograph he had sent him and promises to send Garrison a potrait and write the date on the back as he requested.
