Description:
John M. Fisk writes to Samuel May stating that he misplaced May's last letter but will try to answer the questions that he can remember, specifically about holding a meeting with Stephen S. Foster at West Brookfield. Fisk says that if the meetings were held he could not attend, as he is trying to "keep clear as possible of all causes of excitement, and to abstain entirely from public assemblies and conventions." Fisk tells May that he no longer has any zeal for the antislavery cause and has "lost what little respect I ever had for him [Stephen S. Foster] as an antislavery lecturer." He admits that the "antislavery spirit of North Brookfield ... was brought to life by the forcible introduction, as it were, of the ultra doctrines of Garrisonianism," but he believes this will no longer help to spread the movement. Fisk tells May that "Stephen I know would labor in vain to make converts to the cause here ..." He offers May and Foster to stay at his home and "entertain you in my Bachelor style" if they do decide to come for the meeting.
