Letter from Joseph J. Locke, Barre, [Massachusetts], to Samuel May, 1851 Sept[ember] 12
Description:
J.J. Locke writes to Samuel May telling him that while he is "not a practical man," he "shall make every effort to become skilled in Anti S[lavery] tactics." Locke mentions a lecture he delivered in Dana, Massachusetts, saying he "had quite a good audience - got 34 c[en]ts from it!" He also tells May that he and his entire family are ill and he does not know when he will able to lecture again. However, Locke hopes it will be soon as he is "earning nothing & shall be glad to be in the field soon as possible." Locke says that "For ten successive years sickness in my own person & on the part of others, has consumed two thirds of all my time" and has cost him eleven hundred dollars.
