Although she outgrew waterwings a long time ago, comely Elaine Evorsole, Akron, Ohio, speed swimmer, tries on a life vest of a type used by aviators, to see how it fits. Manufactured for the U. S. Army Air Corps by The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, the vest can be worn deflated without interfering with the movements of the wearer. Pulling a cord at the bottom of the vest punctures a carbon dioxide cartridge, fully inflating it in less than three seconds. The vest is so constructed that, should the wearer be unconscious or wounded, it automatically holds his face above water with no effort on his part.

This new method is expected to save the lives of many U. S. airmen.
