Additional information on back of item: Set up used in determining the tinting strength of artists' oil paints. The tube of paint on the ground glass to the right of the palette knives has arbitrarily been chosen as the standard. A standard volume from this tube is measured out by the use of the brass template to the left of the palette knives and mixed with ten grams of a standard zinc which artists' oil paste. The resulting tint is the standard. The other paints are then matched using a constant volume of color and weighing the quantity of the standard zinc white left under or added to the color to match the tine [sic]. In cases where the paint to be compared is stronger than the standard, more white will be necessary to reduce the tint the reverse will be true in cases where the color is weaker in tinting strength. The white board in back of the scale is used by the artist-technician for matching tints. WPA Federal Art Project, Massachusetts. Photograph courtesy of WPA, Federal Art Project.
