Additional information accompanying item: Springfield Negro Demonstration– August 22, 1965. Peaceful march--Civil rights demonstrators completed without serious incident their march in Springfield yesterday to protest alleged police brutality. A group gathered, above, on the City Hall steps to sing civil rights songs. The march, right, was watched closely by National Guardsmen carrying rifles with fixed bayonets. The marchers completed their two-mile trek, and after several speeches returned to the assembly point and dispersed. Helmeted state and local police backed up the Guardsmen.
