Letter from Charles Turner Torrey, Salem, [Mass.], to Amos Augustus Phelps, 1838 Aug[ust] 14th
Description:
Charles Turner Torrey writes to Amos A. Phelps notifying him that the county meeting at Andover will be held on Septermber 12th and will cause him to miss "the meeting of the Board of Missions at Portland" occurring the same weekend. He then asks Phelps for his opinions about "what they have done at Haverhill about the women" and expresses his dislike for "the sneering tone of the Emancipator." Torrey tells Phelps, "A new paper we must have - able & sound Anti-Slavery and not religious." He then informs Phelps he has engaged Ira Pettybone to preach for 12 weeks but could not find any others, and asks Phelps if he could recommend anybody.
