This monument was erected pursuant to an order of the Continental Congress on January 25, 1776 in memory of Major General Richard Montgomery who fell in battle at Quebec on December 31, 1775, aged 37 years, The state of New York caused the remains of Major General Richard Montgomery to be conveyed from Quebec and deposited beneath the monument the 8th day of July 1818.
