Letter from Oliver Johnson, New York, [N.Y.], to William Lloyd Garrison, July 12, 1853
Description:
Oliver Johnson writes to William Lloyd Garrison expressing his disappointment that Garrison will be unable to join the anti-slavery meeting that Johnson is in the midst of preparing. Johnson states that Henry Ward Beecher will be unable to join them, due to his decision to absent himself to the countryside while in bereavement, and that he fears that Wendell Phillips will be unable to join due to his wife's "feeble condition", and Phillips' difficulty in speaking out of doors. Johnson resolves simply to change the date of the "celebration", and insists that Garrison participate, requesting that he telegraph him on the morrow so that Johnson can announce the meeting in the next issue of the Standard.
