Oliver Johnson sends to Garrison a "few words of affectionate farewell" prior to the latter's departure for Europe, and wishes him a "happy and prosperous journey". Johnson states his pleasure and gratitude that he was able to visit Garrison in Boston, and that Garrison was able to accompany him in visiting John Greenleaf Whittier. Johnson closes in expressing his shock at the sudden passing of Thankful Southwick, and states his regret that he was unable to attend her funeral service.
