Martineau recounts to Garrison having come across a newspaper column in which the history of "our little movement" was detailed, and notes that he recognized a quotation ascribed to him concerning "Mrs. Howe", which he stated he did not realise was given for publication. Martineau goes on to to relay the evolution of his thought on republicanism, and expresses his desire that England should be governed by a constitutional republican form of goverment.
