India restored full freedom 1/2 to Sheik Mohammed Abdullah of Kashmir (shown in 1964 file photo), who had been arrested for his activities in behalf of self-determination for Kashmir. He is a key figure in the 20-year dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, which is divided between the two countries. The release of the 62-year-old Sheik, who has been a prisoner for 13 of the last 14 years, was seen as an attempt by the Indian government to establish a new relationship with him.
