Springfield, Mass. Birthplace of the automobile industry. America's first gasoline buggy had its pulling test, April 19, 1892. Charles E. Duryea, father of the automobile. The Duryea Motor Wagon Co. of Springfield was first U. S. motor car corp. Sept. 21, 1895. Duryea Cars won America's first auto race, Chicago, Nov. 28, 1895, America's second race, New York, May 30, 1896 and England's First race, London to Brighton, Nov. 14, 1896. At the world's first track race, Providence, Sept. 1896, they took all prizes for gasoline cars. A three-cylinder Duryea won the first Eagle Rock Hill Climb, Nov. 5, 1901. #540648 granted to Charles E. Duryea June 11, 1895 antedated the first patents of all other U. S. automobile makers.
