- Description:
-
Excavating old foundations near site of John Harvard residence 1942. Although the excavations were carried to a depth of fifteen to twenty feet, and many old foundation stones of early residences were uncovered, there was no indication as to whether any of these had belonged to the house occupied by John Harvard on Gravel Lane. Sixty years after John Harvard's death, his house was the parsonage and Judge Samuel Sewall of Boston and Newbury wrote in his diary on January 26, 1697: Diary of Samuel Sewall (Fr. Newbury and Chief Justice of Boston Municipal Court) "Jan. 26,1697, I lodged at Charlestown at Mrs. Shepard's, who tells me Mr. Harvard built Th. Ho. I lay in the chamber next t st. As I lay awak past midnight, in my Medeta., I was affected to consider how long agoe God had made provis'n for my comf'le lodging the night, seeing th was Mr. H's ho. And th led me to think of Heaven and Ho. not made w. hands, wh. God for many thousands of yrs. has been storing w. t. richest furniture (saint th are fr. time placed there), & th I had some hopes of being entertained in the magnificent convenient palace, ev. way fitted & furnished. These tho'ts were very refreshing to me."
