- Description:
-
Garden at 49 Pleasant Street. (Originally Fish Street and later 19 South Pleasant Street) was owned in 1812 by John Kidder, and the land extended from 52 feet along High Street down beside a lane 215 feet, and back 75 feet to the street. The Kidders made mirrors. In 1836, Phillips Andover Academy held a mortgage on it. Thomas Fowler, a shipwright bought most of the present property in 1836 and lived there. He was given the right to take water at his own expense from a well near the premises, until in 1840 he bought the land including the well, and still later built the house now known as number 47 over the well. One of his daughters was the grandmother of Harriet Florence Mason, now living in St. John's rectory at 41 Monument Sq. Henry C. Bond married another daughter and bought the property, including both houses, in 1855. He was a clerk. He lived in no. 47 and rented no. 49 to John Marion. He later lived in large mansion on Sycamore St. Somerville. In 1865, the property was bought by John James and Susannah Fitzgibbons who occupied no. 47. When they died (in 1912 and 1932) no. 49 was bequeathed to their son William H., who had lived in it right along, and no. 47 to their son Joseph. William died in 1955, having lived in the house for 43 years.
