The Monument in 1830. In November, 1827, Willard reported: "It is two years since we commenced quarrying at our ledge... What has been done thus far, has been done with our hands tied..." in Jan., 1829, all work was stopped for lack of funds. In 1834-'35, eighteen more courses were laid under the auspices of the Boston Mechanics association: but funds again ran out.
