Rescued by Breeches Buoy After 18 hours of work in an effort to save the cargo, the Steamer Schooner Tiverton was finally abandoned by its caption, Adolph Ahlin, and crew, off Eureka, Calif., where it ran aground early on January 20. All members of the crew were landed via the breeches buoy, and the above scene shows John McCann, oiler, the first of the crew to be rescued, in the carrier. Other members of the crew can be seen grouped on the forepeak of the grounded ship.
