Tuscumbia, Alabama May 5, 1887 Mr. M. Anagnos My dear Friend, Your kind letter was duly received and I heartily thank you for the words of sympathy and interest it contained. I assure you, I have no friend whose esteem I value more highly; or whose good opinion I shall strive harder to deserve than yours. Please do not think I sent that money, because I thought you wanted me to. I sent it simply because I had no use for it, and did not like it around; as I might be tempted to do something foolish with it; in the way of land speculations.
