Building: Public Library
The original Newton Public Library stood on Centre Street north of Vernon Street. Designed by architect Alexander Esty, the stone-faced, Gothic-style building was completed in 1870. In the 1880s, an addition designed by architect George Meacham almost doubled the building's size. Another addition in 1913 was designed by Lewis Bacon. The building served as Newton's main library until 1991.
