At Last - Wooden Manhole Covers - Wooden manhole covers popped up (or did they pop down?) in Los Angeles County where they were urgently needed to complete sewage facilities for a large war housing development. Developed by the county surveyor's office when customary cast-iron covers were not forthcoming because of the metal shortage, the new style street lids are reported to be decay-proof and termite-proof. They save 500 pounds of metal a piece, 250 pounds in the cover and 250 pounds in the frame. The covers come in two shapes--circular and hexagonal. This photo shows County Surveyor Alfred Jones explaining good points of wooden cover to Miss Beverly Hoyt. Big Black dog, "trina," seems bored.
