R. Warren Weston tells about an invitation to Mrs. Jay's to meet (Robert?) Purvis, and he names the other guests there. George Ward asked Maria (Weston Chapman) "about getting Wendell Phillips to go to England to convert the English. ...It seems that John Forbes has written to urge his coming." Henry G. Chapman, Jr., met R. Warren Weston on the street and invited him to dine with relatives and other guests, which proved to be "a two-hours dinner poor & tiresome." R. Warren Weston and John Jay went to the club, but it was too late to hear Bancroft and Bellows speak. Maria Weston Chapman opposed the idea of Wendell Phillips going to Europe.
