William Lloyd Garrison visited the spot where Oliver Johnson was born and the house where he spent his childhood. Johnson told Garrison about the eccentric characters in the neighborhood. Garrison describes a cow following him like an affectionate dog; the incident was quite touching to his feelings. Garrison read that a battle has taken place near Corinth, Mississippi. Garrison writes: "A country life is exceedingly monotonous, presenting no other phase than that of habitual stillness and uniformity."
