Letter from Rosalie DeWolf Hopper, 204 W. 40th St[reet], N.Y., to William Lloyd Garrison, Jan. 31st, 1876
Description:
Rosalie DeWolf Hopper sends her condolences on the death of William Lloyd Garrison's wife, Helen Eliza Garrison. Hopper writes: "I learned the lesson by heart eleven years ago that no word of loving sympathy was ever intrusive even when uttered feebly. So I offer no apology for sending you the assurance that my heart goes out to you in your loneliness--for the absence of the actual presence is very hard to endure even when the spiritual nearness is clearly discerned. The vacant chair is so vacant!"
