Letter from Samuel May, Boston, to Mary Carpenter, September 19, 1848
Description:
May acknowledges the receipt of a parcel which was to have been delivered to him by Ralph Waldo Emerson. He discusses the Chartists and says that there are Americans who will support any movement which seems likely to embarrass the British government. He expresses hopes that the British government will do more than crush the Irish Rebellion and that they will remove its causes as far as possible. May mentions Theodore Parker's "Letter to the People of the United States Touching the Matter of Slavery" and informs Miss Carpenter that Parker's household has suffered the loss of two members from dysentery, which had been very prevalent during the summer.
