Letter from Samuel May, Boston, to Richard Davis Webb, Nov. 10, '57
Description:
May tries to make arrangements for the writing of the abolitionist biographies in the Glasgow biographical dictionary. He objects to letting Reverend Andrew Preston Peabody, the editor of "The North American Review," write the biographies, which he feels were tinged with Peabody's conservatism. May says that Francis Bowen, the former editor, would have been much worse. He informs Webb that he has written a biographical sketch of Maria Weston Chapman.
Addressed from 21 Cornhill, Boston.
Holograph, signed.
In the opening lines of the letter, May indicates that he is writing from Leicester, [Mass.], but has marked the letter from the Boston address to show "the one where [he] should be addressed."
The accompanying envelope is postmarked from Dublin and addressed to May at 21 Cornhill. May's notes on the envelope read, " Rec'd Nov. 6 / 57. Ans'd [Nov.] 10 / [57]" and "The Glasgow Biog. Dict."
