Letter from Samuel May, Boston, to Richard Davis Webb, Dec. 1, [1857]
Description:
May comments on pear culture in and around Boston. He says that the Irish have ruined Boston. On the reverse of the first page, May dates the letter November 28, 1857, and lists the boxes of donations for the Anti-Slavery Fair that have arrived from Europe. He mentions the death of James Gillespie Birney and praises William Chambers', "American Slavery and Colour." May gives an account of the management of "The New York Journal of Commerce" and "The Christian Observer." He regrets Webb's unfortunate experience with Clinton G. Gilroy.
