Letter from Samuel May, Leicester, Mass., to Richard Davis Webb, Nov. 7, 1858
Description:
May informs Webb that he has been in poor health. May regrets the discontinuance of the anti-slavery fair and tells Webb that Mrs. Maria Weston Chapman has been laid up with rheumatism and has therefore been unable to work on her plan, which calls for a great meeting with speeches and refreshments. May says that the abolitionists are in a much depressed state of mind. He tells of the defeat of many pro-slavery candidates in the recent Congressional elections and reports that Samuel Joseph May is in Europe.
