William A. Egan said nearly 300 persons may have been killed in the disaster, which was caused inestimable damage. The tremors sent tidal waves thousands of miles to cities on the U.S. West Coast, Hawaii and Japan. President Johnson has been asked to declare Alaska a disaster area.
