A woman and young girl costumed as "Puritan Daughters" for the Pageant "Children of America", a prominent feature of Worcester, Massachusetts "Safe and Sane" Fourth of July Celebration in 1913. Shortly after the beginning of the 20th century a nation-wide movement to curb riotous and potentially dangerous celebrations of the Fourth of July holiday and promote "Safe and Sane" alternatives gained momentum. As a result, many communities sponsored parades, picnics, and historical pageants and tableaux such as that seen here.
