Caption: File number 703929 Hold for release: 27 April 1947 Navy to use rigid corrugated-steel cells for surplus aircraft preservation--This summer some 2,000 of the war-time surplus carrier-type Naval airplanes will be canned in metal cells for use during the next five years. Moisture content of the air within the cells is maintained at 30% relative humidity level established as the optimum for long-term aircraft storage. A Hellcat, encased in its plastic "cocoon," undergoing evaluation of long-term storage techniques. Plexiglas panel in the covering shows humidity indicator. This method has been found more desirable for large type aircraft whereas the "canning" method is preferred for carrier and training types.
