Ice Peek. Framed in the arch of a starkly beautiful iceberg, a petrol boat of the International Ice Patrol presents a cool picture. The berg’s archway was caused by a “fault” or air pocket which will cause it to melt rapidly when it reaches the Gulf stream. After breaking off from the Greenland ice cap, some bergs meander for more than two years and travel some 2,000 miles. When afloat, approximately 9/10ths of their bulk is submerged. The ice patrol, which charts their wanderings and alerts ships to the movement of ice flows, takes a dim view of ocean liners that come close to icebergs so passengers can obtain photographs.
