The recognized world record is 9:3[4?] set by UCLA in 1965, and that also is the American and national record. Ryun, observing his 20th birthday, did the anchor mile in 3:55.6. It was the second day in a row that Ryun bettered 4 minutes in the mile. His time yesterday in the four-mile relay was 3:59.1.
