Edmund Quincy is anxious for news. He heard from Charles Wade, "the reformed drunkard," that Mrs. Abigail Folsom has left Boston for another city. He hopes that the proceeds of the anti-slavery fair will be enough to pay off the debts of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society. He refers to the ball to be given in honor of the Prince de Joinville. He recalls a remark by Talleyrand about American luxury, which was made in the presence of George Ticknor, who repeated it to Edmund Quincy.
