Caption: Old Alford St. Bridge is falling down, My Fair Lady - And so she did. Right into the drink. The Old Alford St. Bridge linking Charlestown and Everett collapsed with a shattering roar of grinding steel and concrete into the Mystic River. Ten workmen escaped injury. Wreckage blocked river channel and forced a temporary halt to MBTA service. The drawbridge was being dismantled with the counterweight tore loose and the span crashed into the water. Eight of the men working on the road level were able to run to safety, but two others were forced to leap to escape death or serious injury. The bridge opened fully and then the tons of concrete contained in the counterweight tore loose, smashing downward and releasing the open span
