All That Glitters Is Gold -- "Sitters" count some of the foreign gold stacked up in the bottom-most vault of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York today. This vault is 76 feet below the busy streets of the city's financial district. Some $13.4 billion worth of gold is stored at this bank and watched constantly by "sitters." Each foreign country holding gold at the vault has at least one compartment assigned to its exclusive use. Transfers occur frequently after sales and gold is shifted bar by bar from one to another of the 120 compartments held by more than 70 countries.
