Description:
Painting of what workers would have looked like during the Civil War. As activity increased, additional employees were added, including women. In 1861, there were 300 employees of which 70 were women and by the following year the number had increased to 101 women out of 809 employees. This July 20, 1861 "Harper's Weekly" sketch states the "the powder ... is inserted in the cartridge by the men ... The bullet is inserted by the girls and women who are kept constantly employed at Watertown in this avocation."
