Item Information
Title:
The execution of Mrs. Surratt and the Lincoln assassination conspirators, (the drop)
Title (alt.):
Washington, D.C. July 7, 1865. Hanging hooded bodies of the four conspirators; crowd departing
Description:
From "War Memories" catalog: This view shows the scaffold just as the drop was sprung; Mrs. Surratt and the other three conspirators are hanging. These three views, Nos. 7796, 7797, and 7798 comprise a scene of much historic interest. They were made by having three separate cameras set to photograph the scaffold. When the warrant was being read one camera was used and that view was taken; while the rope was being placed around his neck another camera was used and that scene was taken; then when the drop was sprung the third camera was used, and so the entire scene of such tragic interest was photographed clear and distinct.
