Sofia Scalchi (1850-1922) was an Italian contralto who could also sing in the mezzo-soprano range. She performed intermittently at Covent Garden between 1868 and 1890, and with the Metropolitan Opera between 1890 and 1896. She also performed with the Metropolitan Opera in their first staged work, "Faust," in 1883. In 1896, she formed her own company of singers.
