The fortuitous collection of town-based census data on the age, type, and number of forests harvested in 1885 helps interpret forest composition, abundance, and condition during a time of declining agriculture but intensive wood use for heating and industry. Left: Species harvested varied from oak and pine in the southeast and east, chestnut in the center of the state, and maple broadly. Right: Young forests dominated the coast, the Boston region, and the Connecticut Valley, with older forests in the Berkshires and base of Cape Cod.
