Changing Abundance of Wildlife Species
Item Information
- Title:
- Changing Abundance of Wildlife Species
- Description:
-
Wildlife across Massachusetts has changed dramatically with changing habitats and human attitudes. While each species exhibits individualistic behavior, general trends appear. Large carnivores (e.g., wolf and cougar) have been eliminated regionally and not returned, whereas the passenger pigeon and heath hen are now extinct. Many native woodland species were driven to low levels (deer, bear) or eliminated completely (beaver, turkey, moose) in the mid-nineteenth century and have returned in great numbers. Species that favor grasslands, shrublands, and young forest increased with the emergence of farms and loss of forest but have been declining since the late nineteenth century regrowth of forests. An interesting collection of non-native species has arrived through introduction (Eastern cottontail rabbit), long-distance migration (coyote), and shifts in distribution due to changing temperatures and food resources (many birds). Conceptual graph made from data collected by James Cardoza at the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife and the Harvard Forest.
