Artist Liz Shepherd seeks to convey the power of meeting in small groups. The grouping of this piece is egalitarian, with each basket the same height and in a circle so that everyone could face each other. Straw supports give the baskets further authenticity and meaning, because a piece of straw by itself has no strength or value. Together, straw is incredibly durable and strong. This is a metaphor for the farmworkers, immigrants, and very poor people, who felt undervalued and without individual power.
