Bartolomeo Vanzetti autographed letter signed to Cesare, [Charlestown], 7 October 1923
Description:
Expressing confidence in [William G.] Thompson but expecting Judge Webster Thayer to deny motion for new trial' fearing for the ill effects that a prolonged waiting will have on Nicola "[Sacco]; and about his intention to speak to the Judge at the forthcoming hearing on October 22. Translation: He is happy with the presentation by his lawyer, feels that all are in his favor, except Thayer and Katzmann. He is convinced that the judge will refuse motion asking for retrial. Others, American friends of Thompson family and Hill, think that new trial will be allowed., forced by evidence. If the judge denies the motion, we’ll have to wait two years for the Supreme Court of the United States to step in, and in the meantime the enemy will enjoy our suffering. Nicola is well; he is again in seclusion. Vanzetti is in prison work squad, enjoying work and air. Discusses possible strategies for his case. Thanks."
