Building: Drill Shed, rear Classical High School
From 1876 until 1904, physical education at Newton High School consisted of military drills. After drills were replaced with sports, the Drill Shed served as a gymnasium. It held a wooden indoor track around its periphery as well as space for gym classes, bad-weather indoor sports training, and some indoor meets. The Drill Shed was demolished along with the other Newton High School buildings when a new high school building was erected on Lowell Street in 1973.
