Note penciled on back reads: "A fifty year old white pine stand that was, until 1921, overtopped by grey birch. A "shelterwood cutting" was made in 1934, a heavy seed year. The openings thus created are filling in with new pine seedlings at the present time." "Please return photo to Massachusetts State College, News Service, Amherst, Massachusetts" stamped on back. Duplicate of photograph has "1935" and "Painting by S.L. Hamilton" written on back.
