Riverside Hispanic Program; "Do You Know Them? (English Title)" : Les Conoces Tu? Rev. Cotto
Description:
Pablo Cotto begins by asking a question, "Do You Know Them?" for listeners to ask themselves if they know the people around them, in regards to people from different cultures. He describes 3 social/cultural ramifications. 1) material: materials that make up your culture, 2) Social: the relationships you have- family, marriage, home and community, 3) Spirituality/religion. He purposes that you need all three, putting priority in one over the others can be dangerous. He also describes the hispanic community, Spanish and Portuguese with Indigenous and African backgrounds. He also breaks down how people from other cultures may come to new communities looking to settle in an area where it reflects their culture, as well as expressing how no one should be here for over 20 years and not know the language. 2) Either one studies their surroundings, or those that do not. These people suffer from insecurities and in the end up being 'different'. 3. expressing an interest in assimilation. Things that shouldn't be changed, such as continuing saying the name 'Francisco' and not 'Frankie', or 'Jesus' for 'Jessi'. In knowing other languages and cultures will in the end enrich your own culture
